Background: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the triglyceride (TG) to high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Koreans.
Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on 4,925 subjects who participated in the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Chronic kidney disease was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, calculated by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation, which is 1.863¡¿(serum creatinine-1.154)¡¿(age-0.203)¡¿0.742 (if female). The TG/HDL-C ratio was divided equally into quartiles and the prevalence of chronic kidney disease was analyzed based on the quartiles.
Results: The results showed a positive correlation between an increasing tendency of the odds ratio (OR) for the prevalence rate of chronic kidney disease (95% confidence interval) and an increase in the TG/HDL-C ratio in an unadjusted model for Korean adults (P for trend<0.001). For men, the OR did not tend to increase. However, in women, the tendency for an increased prevalence rate of chronic kidney disease was clear, even with adjustment for external factors such as age, waist circumference, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, drinking, and routine activities (P for trend<0.05).
Conclusion: These findings indicate that the TG/HDL-C ratio is significantly associated with the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Korean women (P<0.05).
